What even are pores?

What even are pores?

Hello, lovely...

Can I let you into a little secret?

Pores have a bit of an unfair reputation. Poor little things.

They spend their whole lives helping your skin, only for everyone to spend their time trying to make them disappear.

So before we reach for anything strong, let's find out what pores actually are, what a blocked pore may look like, and when your skin might simply be showing its perfectly normal texture.

Let's have a little look together.

Pores Are Part of Normal Skin

So what actually are pores?

Pores are tiny openings that you can see on the surface of your skin. Many of the pores we talk about in skincare are the openings of hair follicles, connected to the glands that make your skin's natural oil.

That oil is called sebum. It travels towards the surface and helps keep your skin soft, comfortable and protected.

Sebum does not sound particularly glamorous, but it has an important job. Oil is not automatically dirt, and visible pores are not proof that your skin is unclean.

Can I make my pores disappear?

No, and honestly, I would not want you to.

Pores are not mistakes. They are part of healthy skin. Their natural size is influenced by things such as genetics, hormones, skin type and age.

Skincare cannot permanently open, close or erase a pore. What gentle care can do is help prevent oil and shed skin cells from building up, so pores may look clearer and sometimes less noticeable.

Your skin does not need invisible pores. It simply needs pores that are being treated kindly.

Visible Does Not Always Mean Blocked

Why do mine look bigger sometimes?

Some people naturally have more noticeable pores than others. That is normal.

Pores may also look more obvious when oil and shed skin cells collect around the opening. Hormonal changes, your skin type and even the way light falls across your face can change how visible they seem.

You may also notice tiny, fairly even dots around the nose or chin. These can simply be the normal oil lining of the pore rather than a spot that needs treating.

A visible pore is not automatically a blocked pore.

This distinction matters. If a pore is simply visible but flat and comfortable, it does not need to be attacked or dried out.

A blocked pore may begin to feel or look different, perhaps as a small bump, a blackhead, a whitehead or an early spot. Please do not squeeze it to find out. Picking and squeezing can irritate the skin and increase the risk of marks or scarring.

If you are unsure what you are seeing, the kindest starting point is gentle care rather than the strongest product.

What Helps?

  • Pores usually appreciate consistency more than intensity.
  • Gently cleanse rather than scrubbing or repeatedly washing the same area.
  •  Keep your skin moisturised, even if it feels oily.
  • Introduce one active step at a time and follow its approved label.
  • Stop or reduce an active product if your skin becomes sore, increasingly red or uncomfortable.
  • Try not to inspect, squeeze or pick at every visible pore.

The Everyday Guardian Pair

Hudz is the gentle cleansing foundation. Cleansing helps remove surface oil, make-up and daily build-up without suggesting that pores are dirty or need to be scrubbed clean.

Jam is the moisturising and balancing option. Its niacinamide supports the skin barrier and the appearance of calmer, more balanced and clearer-looking skin.

Use both products only as their approved labels direct. Washing more often or using more product does not make pores shrink faster.

Maintenance and congestion are not the same thing

What you notice Guardian choice Why
Normal visible pores Hudz and Jam A gentle cleanse and moisturising support. No targeted spot treatment is needed just because a pore is visible.
Maintenance for build-up The Don Lactic acid supports gentle surface exfoliation and helps reduce the build-up of shed skin cells. Introduce slowly and use only as directed.
A genuinely blocked pore or forming spot Popi Salicylic acid is the targeted option for congestion or an emerging spot. Apply only where and how the approved label directs.

Please Do Not Chase Every Pore

Popi is not for painting over normal skin because a pore looks large in a bright mirror. She is the focused choice when there is genuine congestion or a spot beginning to form.

The Don is the gentler maintenance active for surface build-up. Because The Don and Popi are both active acid steps, do not automatically layer them together. Follow the approved directions and ask for advice if you are unsure.

Before You Wander

Can I tell you something I have noticed?

We spend so much time wishing our pores were invisible that we forget they are quietly doing their job every day.

Your pores do not need to disappear. Your freckles do not need to disappear. Your little lines of laughter do not need to disappear.

Your skin tells the story of someone who is living, and I think that is rather beautiful.

A Little Note from Skin Pickle

One of the happiest days in my treatment room was not when someone finally had perfect skin.

It was when they stopped looking for perfection altogether, because that was usually the moment they started enjoying their own reflection again.

So if the light catches your pores today, please remember: visible does not mean dirty, blocked or wrong.

Love,
Skin Pickle
