Acne types... what's mine telling me?

Acne types... what's mine telling me?

Hello, lovely…

Can I guess what’s happened?

You’ve been looking at your skin…

Looking online…

Looking at pictures…

And before long, you’ve found yourself wondering:

‘Mine doesn’t look like that one… so what type of acne do I actually have?’

If that’s where you’ve found yourself today, you’re not alone.

There are lots of different ways acne can appear. Understanding your skin isn’t about squeezing it into a box—or diagnosing yourself from a photograph.

It’s about noticing what is happening, caring for it gently and knowing when to ask for a little more help.

So… let’s have a little look together.

Every Spot Has Its Own Story

When we hear the word ‘acne’, it’s easy to imagine that everybody experiences exactly the same thing.

But skin is wonderfully individual.

Some people mainly notice tiny blocked pores. Others develop sore, red spots. Some experience deeper, more painful bumps. Others only have the occasional breakout.

No two skin stories are exactly alike—and that’s perfectly okay.

Let’s Meet a Few of the Most Common Visitors

WHITEHEADS  Small blocked pores that stay closed. They may look pale or skin-coloured and can feel a little firm.

BLACKHEADS  Blocked pores that stay open. They look dark because of pigment and changes at the open surface—not because your skin is dirty.

PAPULES  Small, red or inflamed bumps without a visible white centre. They can feel tender or sore.

PUSTULES  Inflamed spots with a white or yellow centre. They can be tempting to squeeze, but your skin would usually prefer patience instead.

NODULES AND CYSTS  Deeper, larger lumps beneath the skin. They can be painful and carry a greater risk of scarring, so they deserve proper advice from a healthcare professional.

These descriptions can help you explain what you are seeing, but different concerns can sometimes look alike. A photograph or online checklist cannot always tell you exactly what is happening.

So… What Is My Skin Trying to Tell Me?

Sometimes your skin is simply saying, ‘I’m growing.’

Sometimes it may be responding to hormones, oil, blocked pores, irritation or a mixture of things.

And sometimes it is saying, ‘Please be gentle with me.’

Your skin isn’t misbehaving to annoy you. Every little clue helps us understand what support it may need.

What Should I Do Now?

The beginning is often much simpler than we think.

CLEANSE  Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Morning and evening is usually enough; washing repeatedly can irritate your skin.

MOISTURISE  Choose light, comfortable hydration that supports your skin without making the routine feel complicated.

PROTECT  Use suitable SPF when you are outdoors, especially when your routine includes ingredients that can make skin more sun-sensitive.

PAUSE  Try not to pick or squeeze. This can make spots worse and increase the chance of scarring.

WAIT  Give a routine time to work. Acne treatment is rarely an overnight job.

Not every spot needs a different product. Sometimes your whole skin simply needs consistency.

From Skin Pickle’s Pantry Shelf

If you would like a product pathway, think of it in three gentle stages. You do not have to jump to every step at once.

First Steps — Hudz and Jam

Begin with Hudz, our foaming cleansing suds, followed by Jam, our balancing gel moisturiser.

Together, they create a simple cleansing-and-hydration foundation while you notice how your skin responds.

For some young skin, keeping these basics steady is the most useful place to begin.

Next Steps — Choose Targeted Support

If individual spots need focused care, Popi can be added as a targeted spot step, with calming and skin-clearing ingredients.

If blocked pores or uneven texture are part of the picture, The Don is TDB’s AHA exfoliating step. It should be introduced carefully and used only as directed on its label.

Add one targeted product at a time. That way, your skin has room to respond and you can tell what feels comfortable. More products do not automatically mean better care.

Routine Option — Acne Support Routine

If you would prefer the acne-focused products gathered together, the Acne Support Routine contains Hudz, Popi and The Don. Jam is available separately if you would like to add the light moisturising step.

The routine is a convenient choice—not a test you have to pass and not proof that your acne is ‘bad enough’. The right path depends on what your skin is showing you, how sensitive it feels and whether professional treatment would be more appropriate.

Important: these products are supportive skincare, not a diagnosis or a treatment for every form of acne. Follow each product label, avoid introducing several active products together, and stop if your skin becomes significantly irritated.

When a Little Extra Help Matters

You do not have to work out acne alone.

If you would like some individual help understanding what your skin may be telling you, you can book a Skin Pickle Discovery Call or a deeper 1-2-1 personalised Teen Coaching Consultation.

Alternatively, please speak to a GP if your acne is moderate or severe, if you develop painful nodules or cysts, if it is leaving scars, or if it is making you feel very unhappy and request a referral to a dermatologist.

Acne on the chest or back, acne that is widespread, or skin that is not improving also deserves proper advice.

Looking for support isn’t giving in. It’s looking after yourself.

Before You Go

It’s very easy to spend all your time asking:

‘What type of acne do I have?’

Perhaps the kinder question is:

‘What does my skin need from me today?’

Sometimes… that’s all your skin has been hoping you’ll ask.

A Little Note from Skin Pickle

After thirty-five years of looking at skin, I’ve learnt something rather wonderful.

No two faces have ever been exactly the same. Not one.

Every freckle. Every smile line. Every pore. Every little spot.

They all belong to someone completely unique.

Your skin isn’t supposed to look like anyone else’s. It’s supposed to look like yours.

And I think that’s something worth celebrating.

Thank you for trusting me with your questions. The Pantry door will always be open.

Love,
Skin Pickle
