Why isn't my skin getting better?

Come on in, lovely...

If you've found yourself here, I'm going to guess you've been trying.

Really trying.

Maybe you've bought a cleanser that everyone online seemed to love.

Maybe a friend told you about a product that worked for them in three days.

Maybe you've stood in front of the mirror wondering, 'What am I doing wrong?'

Before we go any further, can I tell you something I wish every teenager knew?

You're probably not doing anything wrong.

Sometimes your skin simply needs more time than the internet makes us believe.

Let's have a little look together.

Your Skin Isn't a Light Switch

One of the biggest surprises from my treatment room over the years wasn't how many teenagers had spots.

It was how many thought they were failing because their skin hadn't changed after a week or two.

The truth is, your skin isn't a light switch.

It's more like a little garden.

You can't plant seeds today and expect flowers tomorrow.

First the roots grow, even though you can't see them.

Your skin also responds over time. If you're using an acne treatment recommended by a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist, some treatments can take two to three months before they begin to work.

A gentle everyday routine also needs consistent time before you can understand how your skin feels with it.

That can feel like forever when you're looking in the mirror every day.

I know.

But if a product causes marked irritation, swelling or discomfort, don't keep using it simply to reach a deadline. Stop and ask a parent or carer, pharmacist, GP or qualified healthcare professional for advice.

Sometimes We Accidentally Make Things Harder

When our skin isn't changing as quickly as we'd hoped, it's tempting to think, 'Maybe I just need another product.'

So we swap.

Then swap again.

Before long, our skin is trying to keep up with lots of new ingredients arriving at once.

Instead of helping, that can leave skin feeling irritated or even more unsettled.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is pause, breathe and give our skin a chance to catch up.

A Few Gentle Things That Really Do Help

You don't need to change your whole life overnight.

Little things, repeated consistently, can make skincare feel much more manageable.

CLEANSE Wash gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Morning and evening is usually enough.

MOISTURISE Use a light moisturiser that feels comfortable on your skin.

PROTECT Finish your morning routine with SPF and follow the directions on the label.

PAUSE Try not to add several unfamiliar products at the same time.

NOTICE Pay attention to comfort as well as appearance. Stinging, swelling or continuing irritation deserves advice.

LEAVE Try not to pick or squeeze spots. If you do pick, please don't be cross with yourself. It's a habit many people struggle with, and we'll talk about it together another day.

From Skin Pickle's Pantry Shelf

If you're looking for a simple routine rather than adding lots of new products, Hudz, Jam and Ray offer a gentle place to begin.

HUDZ Foaming Cleansing Sudz

Use Hudz to cleanse gently without turning washing into a battle. Massage one or two pumps over damp skin for around thirty seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Your skin should feel comfortable afterwards - never tight.

JAM Balancing Gel Moisturiser

Follow with Jam for light hydration and everyday support. Its niacinamide gel formula keeps the moisturising step simple while you give your routine time to settle.

RAY Reflect & Protect Tinted Day Cream SPF30

In the morning, finish with Ray as the added SPF step to help protect your skin when you head outside. Use it as directed on the product label.

Hudz, Jam and Ray support the foundations of an everyday skincare routine. They are not acne medicines and cannot promise to clear every cause of spots.

Begin simply. Stay consistent. And ask for help if your skin is not settling.

If You'd Like a Little Extra Help

If you're not sure where to begin, that's exactly why we created the Skin Pickle Routine Builder.

It helps us understand how your skin feels today, so we can suggest a manageable place to start without the overwhelm.

If you would like some individual help understanding what your skin may be telling you, you can book a Skin Pickle Discovery Call or a deeper 1-2-1 personalised Teen Coaching Consultation.

Because skincare shouldn't feel like homework. It should feel manageable.

A Little Note from Skin Pickle

I've met thousands of people over the years, and I honestly can't remember a single one whose worth was decided by their skin.

Not one.

So if your skin has been making you feel frustrated lately, please remember this.

You're growing.

Your skin is growing.

And both of you deserve a little patience.

I'm really glad you came in today.

The kettle will be on whenever you need another chat.

Love,
Skin Pickle
